is his view exactly? Spinoza, like many Judeo-Christians today, appears to believe in a single god. It is difficult to tell exactly what Spinoza thought as in his lifetime he
had published little, questioned biblical miracles and was called an atheist by some. However, he did contend that the bible should be used to provide a moral basis for man.
Despite any criticisms he may have had, the bible to Spinoza, was good. However, that does not really say what he believed in respect to Gods existence or power. Obviously,
if one is to support the bible, one likely does believe in God, and there is much evidence that Spinoza does. The question is what exactly does he think of
God and how does his view differ from others? And that is not an easy question to answer. Spinoza says that he believes God is the sole free cause, and
he contrasts that view with other views of God and Gods freedom. What does this mean and how does it differ from other philosophers views? Spinoza maintained that the universe
and God are one in the same. God then is the sole, or only, free cause of the creation of all, but he did not really create the world. Rather,
God is the world and the universe and it is just there. At the same time, he may be seen as both the cause of, and the universe, in one.
He is the universe. One can see how his view might be equated with atheism as he did not believe in the God many people who worship the Judeo-Christian God
