rich. Brief Summary The action of "Do the Right Thing" takes place on the hottest day of the year, in the Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhood in Brooklyn (Albright, 2003). Sal
(Danny Aiello) owns and operates a pizzeria, Sals Famous, which is a neighborhood landmark; Mookie (Spike Lee) is his delivery man (Albright, 2003). Angry and miserable with the heat,
Sal mutters "Im gonna kill somebody today," which turns out to be an accurate prediction, though not quite the way he thinks (Albright, 2003). The anger that seems to
fester just under the surface is exacerbated by the heat, until finally things erupt: Sal smashes the boombox of Radio Raheem (Bill Nunn), and the fight brings the racist
police onto the scene (Albright, 2003). They break up the fight but strangle Raheem (its not clear if its accidental or not) as they try to arrest him (Albright,
2003). The disbelieving crowd stands silent, then Mookie picks up a trash can, yells "HATE!" and throws it through the pizzeria window; at that the crowd, mostly black, wrecks
the place and burns it to the ground (Albright, 2003). Ambiguity Is the Point One of the reasons why the film remains controversial is that its ambiguous. Its
hard to determine who the protagonist is (if there is one), and that makes it difficult for an audience to follow. Sal is presented in a very favorable light:
hes hard-working, fair, and has located his business in a neighborhood in which hes a minority; he apparently likes his customers and they like him (Albright). Mookie
