follows: "Dyslexia is present when the automatization of word identification (reading) and/or word spelling does not develop or does so very incompletely or with great difficulty"(Gersons-Wolfensberger & Ruijssenaars, 1997, p.
PG). This working definition means that dyslexia is characterized in practice by retardation in both reading and spelling that is severe enough to resist the ordinary teaching methods and remedial
efforts (1997). In other words, children with dyslexia learning to read in the traditional classroom will have great difficulty. Upon examination, it is often accompanied by very slow and/or inaccurate
word identification; spelling may also be affected (1997). In looking at the definition one can see why the disorder is so controversial. Who is to say that someone is just
a slow learner or that they had a bad first grade teacher? Often, in the latter case, the child will eventually catch up and in the former, IQ type tests
are administered. It is felt that if a child is performing below grade level but does well on the intelligence tests, that he or she has some type of learning
disability at least. Of course, the inability to learn to read or spell properly may in fact be attributable to a variety of causes and so, the diagnosis of dyslexia
is not easy. There are also other behaviors or traits which are characteristic of dyslexia. However, in respect to spelling, and in line with the hypothesis that sees dyslexia as
being associated with developmental difficulties, one may wonder to what extent are the spelling difficulties similar to that of children who are younger? Dyslexia--its causes, definition and treatment--is controversial. It
is quite possible then that the trouble dyslexics have is related to spelling troubles. Might the same element that creates spelling difficulties for younger controls be evident in dyslexic
