A 10 page paper that examines the effects of tracheotomy on children's speech production. Tracheotomy, while saving a child's life by providing an unobstructed air supply, has also shown to entail developmental risks, such as speech delay. This effect of tracheotomies in young children has been well documented, particularly in regards to children who have long-term tracheotomy. This examination of literature pertaining to this topic investigates what studies have discerned relative to this problem, and also shows the need for more research on this topic. may lead to later difficulties both in language acquisition and articulation. Over the years, numerous approaches to the problem of speech for tracheotomized patients have been implemented for adults. These
approaches include sign language, vocabulary boards, lip synching/lip reading, writing, computerized communication, finger occlusion of the trach tube and the development of other sounds that may be produced without actual
laryngeal speech (Engleman and Turnage-Carrier, 1997). However, these approaches will not work for either infants or young children who are placed at-risk for language developmental delays when tracheotomy
is necessary during the critical phases of language and cognitive development (Engleman and Turnage-Carrier, 1997). The following examination of literature pertaining to this topic investigates what studies have discerned
relative to this problem. Background A tracheotomy is a surgical procedure that involves making an incision at the base of the neck in the windpipe (trachea)to create an opening
(stoma) into which a tube (cannula) is inserted for breathing (Kertoy, 1999). While tracheotomy preserves life when airways are obstructed, this life-saving intervention comes at a price. The structures of
the upper airway that warm and moisten air, as well as filtering air-borne debris, play a reduced or non-existent role (Speech for patients, 1998). Smell, taste and swallowing can also
be effected. This can reduce appetite and food intake to the point that , in some cases, this may become a life-threatening factor (Speech for patients, 1998). The stoma
