with "impulsivity, sustained attention and over-activity" (Stahr, et al, 2006, p. 201). The National Institutes of Health indicate that ADHD is the most frequently diagnosed psychiatric disorder of childhood, as
it affects between 3 and 5 percent of school age children (Snider, Busch and Arrowood, 2003). Without effective intervention strategies, these behavior patterns can constitute obstructions that prevent these children
from acquiring new skills and knowledge in a timely manner. This situation is further complicated by the fact that there are often comorbid disorders, such as "oppositional defiant disorders, behavior
disorders, and speech or language disorders (Stahr, et al, 2006). Levy and Hay (2003) substantiate that speech and language disorders often accompany ADHD, but also indicate that the reasons
for this association are unknown. Two common intervention approaches for managing ADHD are "pharmacological (e.g. stimulants) and behavioral strategies" (Stahr, et al, 2006, p. 201). Both of these approaches will
be explored in this discussion, with a particular emphasis on providing ADHD children with appropriate speech therapy. However, before proceeding with an examination of this topic, it is instructive to
first define what is meant by "functional assessment" since this is term that is frequently used in this body of literature. Functional assessment refers to the "full scope of
strategies used to identify the function of the target behavior" (Stahr, et al, 2006, p. 201). In other words, an intervention is designed to address the function that the targeted
behavior performed for the child, rather than the form of the behavior itself (Stahr, et al, 2006). This approach offers a number of benefits, as it places emphasis on building
