the future. When we consider spatial planning in ancient times the Roman culture emerges as one of the most progressive. Roman cities,
and the spatial planning that they obviously entailed, served as models for a number of diverse cultures. The Roman forum is perhaps one of the most visible aspects of
spatial considerations. An open space which served as a ritual center, public meeting ground, marketplace or political center, the forum was very important to the morphology of the Roman
city. The exact origin of the Roman forum is unknown but they very likely evolved from the Greek agora or possibly from similar areas in Eutruscan settlements in northern
and central Italy (Fusch, 1994). Roman forums were an integral component of hundreds of urban cities around Italy (Fusch, 1994).
They served as a central element in the spatial relationships obvious in the cities as a whole. Roman forums coupled with two crossing streets were the central point in
Italian cities and made up the characteristic grid pattern for which these highly planned cities became known (Fusch, 1994). Italy is
