Essay / Research Paper Abstract
A 10 page research paper that investigates the topic of spatial analysis specifically in regards to the uses of this technology in determining spatial patterns of insurgent threat incidents. The research suggests that spatial analysis has the ability to predict change in insurgent activity over time and that this technology can be used as a tool for facilitating military intelligence in regards to insurgent activity. evaluating suitability and capability, for estimating and predicting, and for interpreting and understanding" seemingly disparate data sets of geographical data (Spatial analysis, 2005). Geographic Information System (GIS) employ four types
of spatial analysis, which are spatial overlay and contiguity analysis; surface analysis; linear analysis and raster analysis (Spatial analysis, 2005). In recent years GIS has become a necessary and
imminently practical tool for "effective and efficient decision making, planning and management" of military operations, as GIS provides a "spatial decision support framework" that facilitates the "collection, storage, manipulation and
output of multidisciplinary data" (Bagley, 2004). The following investigation of spatial analysis specifically examines the uses of this technology in regards to determining spatial patterns of insurgent threat incidents. The
research suggests that spatial analysis has the ability to predict change in insurgent activity over time and that this technology can be used as a tool for facilitating military intelligence
in regards to insurgent activity. In fact, Grau (2004) reports that the military is currently employing GIS software and spatial analytical techniques. This GIS software utilizes the Global Positioning
System in order to locate the sites of past ambushes and insurgent attacks and to calculate possible "future attack sites, assembly areas, safe houses and residents" (p. 42). By utilizing
pattern analysis mapping software, military officials can predict sites and the likely times of insurgent attack (Grau, 2004). Another application of spatial analysis is in geographic profiling. The term
"geographic profiling" refers to a police technique that is adaptable to military needs (Grau, 2004). This technique combines spatial analysis and psychological behavior patterns of criminals (Grau, 2004). Additionally, it
also considers such factors as distance to the crime, demographics, landscape analysis, pattern analysis, crime scene forensic analysis and psychological criminal profiling (Grau, 2004). Insurgent activity, that is, ambushes, raids,
