just a couple of decades ago. While our parents did not often flinch at spanking to discipline us if we do the same for our children we are subject
to being brought up on charges of child abuse! Spanking, however, is considerably different than beating. For children to develop into productive and law abiding citizens they need
to be given guidance as to what is appropriate and what is inappropriate societal behavior. Mild spanking is an effective way of doing this.
There are both positives and negatives associated with spanking as punishment and as a means to instill acceptable behavior. Arguably, spanking has been an effective tool for
generations past. There simply was not the degree of misbehavior among children of past generations. While this observation can be used as a means of justifying spanking, however,
the true explanation probably revolved more around societal norms and mores than any one act which was customarily utilized to correct behavior. Indeed,
spanking could be an effective tool for ensuring appropriate behavior. This is true, however, only when conscientious and consistent adults are charged with delivering the corrective measure. An
adult who uses spanking as a means of venting their anger teaches the child nothing but violence. Care must also be taken to consider how the circumstances of the
spanking will affect a childs self esteem. Furthermore, to be effective spanking must go hand in hand with a society which frowns on inappropriate behavior, not encourages it.
