is often a great deal of religious imagery present within the paintings. In discussing two of the artists from classic Spanish paintings we are presented with portraits that are incredibly
similar. These paintings are "Philip IV" (1624) by Velazquez and "A Knight of Alcontara or Calatrava" (1650-1655) by Murillo. In the following paper we examine and analyze the two paintings,
comparing and contrasting the two as well. Velazquez This particular painting is, as the name signifies, a painting of the King of Spain, Philip IV. It is a
dark painting that depicts a young king, and perhaps an uncomfortable king. It may be that posing for such a painting caused the subject discomfort or that such attention was
something this king was not used to. In any event, the painting is clearly one that depicts a young man in a standing position. He is holding something in his
right hand, perhaps a paper or perhaps a handkerchief. The majority of his weight rests on his right leg, with his left leg bent to help balance. There is
a chain of sorts which goes around his right shoulder and down across his chest. His clothing is typical of the time period it seems for he wears shortened pants,
what are called knickers today, and a dark cape that is full and is approximately the same length as the abbreviated pants. As mentioned, the subject looks uncomfortable and
seems almost worried as he looks directly at the viewer, or the artist. Interestingly enough, however, "After the finishing of Philips portrait, Philip IV declared Velazquez the Royal Chamber artist
(court painter) and became Diegos patron"(Lenker). In this regards we must assume Philip IV liked his work. It should be noted at this point that some of the analysis
