they are forced to assimilate into a cultural existence so different from their own is enough of a challenge; however, the mounting pressure of other circumstances -- including the absence
of multilingual programs on the school curricula, teacher apathy, a general lack of educational diversity and the presence of cultural and social influences -- only increases the pressure these students
already experience on a daily basis. The historical and geographical points of view find the origin of Spanglish based within the Latin alphabet of West Saxon Standard used in 1000
AD where there was far more consistency with regard to sounds and letters. Contemporary English is terribly troubling to Spanish-speaking populations, often leaving them wholly unable to grasp the
language, which then precludes them from assimilating into society. That this ancient alphabet is more than ninety-percent phonemic while modern English is a mere forty percent is clearly indicative
of the difficulties the Latino community have when it comes to mastering Americas mother tongue (Betts, no date). The goal of vocabulary instruction for emergent readers is to a) instill
a sense of intrigue and excitement and b) establish a sound and literate grasp of the English language. Achieving these objectives is at the core of vocabulary instruction because
