and 1598. This was and interesting time in Spains history. By the sixteenth century Spain had amassed an empire. She was, in fact, the worlds first global
empire and held control not just over large parts of Europe but over large parts of the Americas as well (Parker, 2000). Spain had a long history of conquest
and exploitation and that history would evolve even more in the latter half of the sixteenth century. The region that would ultimately be named after Philip II, the Philippines,
were one of the more interesting of Spains late fifteenth century colonies. Philip II was a surprisingly interesting and versatile member
of Spanish royalty. Thompson (1999, 5) describes him as: "master of the Armada, and,
as consort of Bloody Mary between 1554 and 1558, king of England for four years . . . the ruler of a world empire that stretched from Italy and Flanders
to Florida, California and the Philippines". By far one of the more interesting chapters of
Philip IIs life, in fact, revolved around that innocuous group of islands now known as the Philippines. The Philippines are, of course, just one chapter in the world history
of the time, a world history that was influenced by a number of factors. Two of the most predominant of these factors were of course national mindset and technology.
