the future remains unclear, the past shines as a crystal remembrance of how much stronger Southwest Airlines foundation is than ValuJets. Started by two Texans, Herb Kellehr and Rollin King
in 1967 as Air Southwest Company, company made its first scheduled flight out of Dallas Love Field Airport four years later in 1971. Two and a half decades later, Southwest
is the United States sixth largest airline. ValuJet was founded much more recently by four men early in the summer of 1992. Barely a year and a
half later the company was providing passenger air service to four southeastern cities. With especially low fares, ValuJet airlines took off almost as quickly as its planes and was serving
26 cities by the end of 1995 with more scheduled for the very near future. ValuJet was undeniably successful but it never did come close to competing with Southwest in
terms of profitability. In the late Spring of 1996, a ValuJet crash killed 110 passengers and the reputation of the airline along with it. In this paper, various causal
factors for the inherent successes and/or intrinsic failures of each airline shall be examined. Clearly, neither ValuJets short-lived successes or Southwests industry longevity are based upon the
provision of luxury. In fact, according to its rivals, Southwest airlines maintains a no-frills approach that hinders service comparisons and reduces customer expectations. Neither airline assigns seats or
