It is true that in 2004, Southwest did not have the same level of profits as it had in the past - profit was $313 million, which was half their
profits in 2000 (Gimbel, 2005). Still, this is the only airline to earn a profit since 9/11 (Gimbel, 2005). As this author says, "Southwest is still,, by almost any measure,
the healthiest airline in the business" (Gimbel, 2005, p. 93). Besides the general downswing in the industry, Southwests competitors, like JetBlue and AirTran are getting bigger (Gimbel, 2005). Both have
adopted different strategies Southwest uses to contain costs; for example, JetBlue adopted Southwests one-aircraft model but added different frills (Gimbel, 2005). But, as Colleen Barrett, the companys president, said, other
airlines do not have the same employees and that is where Southwests competitive advantages lies (Gimbel, 2005). No company remains a leader with over three decades of profits by accident.
To do so, the company must have a sound business strategy and exceptional human resource management. That is exactly what Southwest has. Consider their mission statements. The overall general mission
