leverages their value and strategies may be identified in the way that the firm may leverage resources in the future. There are many resources at Southwest; the most important
physical resources are the aircraft. In March 2012 there were a total of 558 Boeing 737 jets under the southwest banner (Southwest, 2012). However, with the acquisition of AirTran the
total aircraft owned by the firm now amounts to 698, most of which are Boeing 737s with an additional 88 Boeing 717s (Southwest, 2012). 499 of these aircraft are
owned outright with the remaining aircraft being held under long term leases. The strategy of the firm has to be the ownership of all aircraft in the same class; Boeing
737s. Having a fleet made up of only a single type of aircraft is relatively unique within the airline industry, as many airlines have a number of different size aircraft
the different capabilities to meet their ongoing operational needs. The way in which Southwest operates, with internal flights utilizing hubs, facilitates the use of a single size aircraft where it
is possible to easily substitute one aircraft for another is there are operating issues. This operating model provides some significant operating benefits in terms of cost management as well
as the practical aspects of maintaining the fleet, this is particularly important to Southwest as they undertake the majority of maintenance and repair of aircraft in-house. With a fleet made
up of only a single type of aircraft this reduces the overall maintenance costs; the level of parts and skills required to maintain their fleet is reduced to the parts
