leverage these core competencies, especially with the recent acquisition of AirTran and the opportunity to expand into international markets. 1. Introduction Southwest Airlines has been argued by a number of
commentators as being the useful airline in the US. The firm created and established the low-cost carrier model, leveraged a first mover advantage as its initial source of competitive advantage
and has been able to adapt to the changing environment (Gittell, 2005; ovindarajan and Lang, 2002). The aim of this report is to demonstrate how and why the firms be
able to be so successful, but clearly matching the organisations structure, resources and culture with the vision, mission and planned strategy. Furthermore, it may be hypothesised that with the existing
core competencies the organisation is in a strong position to continue to evolve in the future with an international expansion strategy leveraging the resources and knowledge gained from the AirTran
acquisition. The report will look at the company, consider the way in which it operates and assessing the alignment of the vision and general setup of the company with its
