international relations. However, for trading, or political, relations to be successful there needs to be an understanding of the different cultures and the way this impacts on relationships and values
and when looking at the way culture has developed as well as the way knowledge may be used can be seen as strategic. South East Asia is a relativity
diverse area, including areas such as Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, Vietnam, the Philippines, Burma, Laos, Cambodia Papua New Guinea, in addition to this China, Taiwan and Hong Kong are also
geographically a part of South East Asia, but they are often separated when assessed in political context. There is a range of diversity in this area with different values and
different national and international influences. To consider the issue of culture the first stage is to consider what is meant by culture and then look at the way in which
it may manifest going on to consider the specific aspects seen in South East Asia. There are many ways in which
culture may be seen as being formed, communicated, emphasized and retained. The culture may be seen as the embodiment of the norms, values and beliefs (Trice and Bayer, 2003). These
may be seen as isolated within the company, or reflections of the wider general culture of the area or region. Often cultures are seen as being permanent stable influences, but
idea of stability is not necessarily true, as a negative or fragmented culture may exist, or a dynamic culture which does not promote stability.
