4/2002 to Use This Paper Properly, INTRODUCTION This is a post civil war history paper that
focuses on South Carolina and the events in that area that happened towards the end and after the Civil War. AFTER THE CIVIL WAR Of course the
biggest problem after the Civil War was the fact that the blacks were all free and wanted to work their own land; they werent interested in taking care of the
land for a former slave owner. This had a negative economic effect on the area due to the major loss of labor at that time. There were those Negroes
who could not afford their own land and did stay on to work on the plantations they had been on all their lives. The difference now was that they
were paid a wage, and they were free to break their contract at any time and go to another plantation if they wished. One newspaper reported, however, that "37,000
blacks have already left the South Carolina area" (Trinkley 2002, PG). Many of the smaller farms were in debt up to their ears after the Civil War and had burned
out buildings and heavy damages to their property. These people, who had formerly just grown food crops, began to attempt to grow cotton - a "cash" crop. When
the cotton crops failed several years in a row, these people got deeper and deeper into debt (Trinkley 2002). Those plantation owners who were wealthy enough often sold off what
they could and moved to Brazil; this area still allowed slavery and one could run a large plantation from that country as well, if not better, than in South Carolina.
