Beach to be developed, with people like Carl G. Fisher and the Lummus Brothers leading the way in the 1910s ("South Beach"). South Beach, like much of the Florida coast,
has changed dramatically over the years, sometimes due to natural disasters such as hurricanes, and sometimes due to man-made improvements ("South Beach"). South Beach, known locally as "SoBe," "started as
farm land," when Henry and Charles Lum "purchased 165 acres ... for coconut farming" in 1870 ("South Beach"). The Lums left the island in 1894, leaving their plantation to John
