Discussion Physically, South Beach is a section of Miami Beach; it "encompasses the lower 23 blocks of the island (Miami Beach is on an island connected to Miami proper by several causeways) from the point south of 1st Street to 23rd Street" ("South Beach"). South Beach was the first part of Miami Beach to be developed, with people like Carl G. Fisher and the Lummus Brothers leading the way in the 1910s ("South Beach"). South Beach, like much of the Florida coast, has changed dramatically over the years, sometimes due to natural disasters such as hurricanes, and sometimes due to man-made improvements ("South Beach"). South Beach, known locally as "SoBe," "started as farm land," when Henry and Charles Lum "purchased 165 acres ... for coconut farming" in 1870 ("South Beach"). The Lums left the island in 1894, leaving their plantation to John Collins; Collins "used the land for farming purposes, discovering fresh water and extending his parcel from 14th Street to 67th in 1907" ("South Beach"). In 1912, the Lummus Brothers, Miami businessmen, bought 400 acres of Collinss land; they wanted to build an "ocean front city" of single family homes ("South Beach"). In 1913, Carl G. Fisher arrived with a vision of establishing South Beach "as a successful city independent of Miami" ("South Beach"). In March, 1915, "Collins, Lummus, and Fisher consolidated their efforts and incorporated the Town of Miami Beach" and in 1918, the MacArthur causeway was completed, joining the island to the city of Miami ("South Beach"). A land boom began in Florida in 1920, and Miami Beach and South Beach were swept up in the excitement ("South Beach").
