of the key issues currently facing the new South Africa. Apartheid Government in South Africa attempted to construct society, through racial segregation, in manner that was engineer so that
the political economy would benefit only the minority white population (King 13). This political and economic reality was clearly evident in the formulation of the bantustans, which was land that
was "intended to become separate locations for the African population" (King 13). The rationalization for the bantustans was that these separate territories were the best solution for meeting the cultural
and political needs of diverse ethnic groups. Therefore, the ultimate purpose of the apartheid state was to bring about this transformation of
South Africa, while also simultaneously conforming with the needs, both political and economic, of the white elite. While the borders of the bantustans have eradicated by political reintegration, research indicates
that the "imprint of apartheid spatial planning remains upon the landscape and continues to shape many of the material realities of rural residents" (King 13). Apartheid is recognized as having
its impetus in the 1948 election of the National Party, which promoted the concept as a focus of its campaign, even though many segregationist policies were already existent at that
time as the segregationist mindset dates from the early roots of country in colonialism (Henrard 37). While racially discriminatory policies were in place in South Africa by the end
of the eighteenth century, there is consensus among historians that it was only after the Anglo Boer War in 1902 and the 1930s that a "cogent ideology of segregation emerged
and was implemented" (Henrard 37). Apartheid was characterized by a central premise that can be summarized as "divide and rule" (Henrard 37). This led to subdividing the ethnically diverse
