they are going, writers, leaders, and intellectuals in South Africa, and elsewhere, have produced books that both enlighten as to the present course of South Africa and illuminate the past.
Exemplifying this South African literature are biographies on South African leader Nelson Mandela, and noted writer and scholar Dr. Sindiwe Magona. Both Magona and Mandela grew up in rural
settings where they were largely sheltered from the restrictions of apartheid. Both of them have strong family ties and the strength of personality that brings. While Mandela, as a political
activist and leader, has been largely concerned with the overall picture relative to South African society, Magonas writing has concentrated offering a view of apartheid that gives an individual perspective.
As the son of a tribal sub-chief, Mandelas birth name was not "Nelson," but rather the tribal name of "Rolihlahla," which means "troublemaker" in his native language of Xhosa.
Mandela grew up in a rural area where he lived the life of an average youngster. Since his parents were not wealthy, even by the South African standards, Mandela has
always had the ability to empathize with the poorest of the countrys population. Nevertheless, his background as chiefs son also gave him a strong sense of family and inherited
power. As Martin Meredith points out in his biography on Mandela, this may be the origin of his occasional lapses toward a patriarchal authority. Meredith has also pointed out the
dichotomy in Mandelas character that caused him to live up to his name of "troublemaker," on one hand; and, on the other, his strong sense of conservatism has prevented him
