Essay / Research Paper Abstract
A 3 page essay that considers the problem of mind or soul and body duality. The writer argues that the body/soul duality that runs throughout the course of Western cultural tradition is an erroneous concept that can be traced to male anxiety over his position in the natural scheme of things. The desire to separate from their mothers is a primary psychological task for males. Furthermore, they feel compelled by their sex drive to have dominion over women. This creates numerous contradictory yet compelling drives that war in the male mind. The division of the identity--mind or soul versus body--divorces the male psyche from this entire boondoggle of confusion and affords the illusion that the urges of the body are not really him, that is, that his true identity rests solely in the mind. This point is argued. No sources are cited/no bibliography is provided.

the primary parent. The female gives birth and suckles the young. In the wild, many male mammals have little, if anything, to do with the raising of the next generation.
For mammals, the mother is the parent. While human civilization readily acknowledges the role of the father in procreation, until the current era with its egalitarian standards, the norm has
continued for the mother to be the primary parent, particularly in the early years of life. This makes his mother a powerful figure in the life of a young boy.
The natural inclination of all young children is to identify with their mothers. Freud recognized that this entails psychic problems for the male as he must switch his primary identification
from his mother to his father in the early years of life. In order to accomplish this task, patriarchal notions encouraged boys to consider females as "inferior" in every respect
