A nun and a poet, Sor Juana De La Cruz was born in 1648 and died in 1695, having lived most of her life in Mexico City. Her life was
perhaps short lived but she made quite an impact on the society of her time, and still stands as an image of intellect and feminism. The following paper examines her
intellectual and feminist nature and influence. Sor Juana De La Cruz As one author notes, "She wrote things women werent supposed
to write. She broke the rules" and often lived on the edge in relationship to her intellect and her gender (Robinson, 2006). She was, in many ways, a simple woman
but also a rebel as "Men of power and authority simply did not intimidate her, and she continually refused to succumb to their dictates" (Robinson, 2006). She was far more
educated than most men of the time and place, and stood up for the rights of women to be educated. Her education
apparently began at a very early age as her grandfather allowed her to use his library, an extensive library, and he taught her to read and write in Latin as
well as Spanish (Sunshine for Women, 1999). Robinson indicates she taught herself to read from the age of 3 (Robinson, 2006). When she was a young teen she was presented
to the court and was quickly taken in and made one of the favorites of the court (Sunshine for Women, 1999). However, she quickly decided she needed solitude and silence
to write and study and at the age of 19 she "entered the convent of the Carmelitas Descalzas (the barefoot Carmelites), a very strict order, for several months" and then
