ancient Greece had in mind when they wrote their great tragic plays. By Athens Golden Age, it had become accepted that tragedy should deal with enormous issues -- good versus
evil, the gods versus man, man versus fate. Aristotle first noted that a tragedy needed irony, and it needed a tragic flaw or error; for him, a tragic figure
is one whose purposes are frustrated by his own ignorance or obstinacy, so that he does not see the error of his ways until it is too late (Lind, xiii).
In that vein, we will look at the character of Creon in Antigone, and determine whether he fits the Aristotolean definition of a tragic figure. Clearly, the characterization of Creon
changes dramatically from the beginning of the story to the end. It is easy to see Creon in this story as the bad guy who gets his just desserts, and
yet that is unfair, because he is too richly drawn to be limited by such a cardboard characterization. As the story opens, he is a very new ruler, and his
idealism about the true role of humanity within the bounds of the state is untested by experience. It is important to define what Creon feels that role is, because it
contrasts dramatically with Antigones ideas, and forms the basis for the conflict that drives the plot. At the core of Creons value system is a belief that there is no
higher good than the good of the state. As the king, Creon feels that the responsibility for determining what constitutes the good of the state rests with him. Creon also
believes at the beginning that the good of the state is unchanging; what is good for the state today will be good for the state tomorrow, and to show any
