Essay / Research Paper Abstract

An 8 page research paper/essay that discusses three works that highlight the subjugated role of women in history. It has only been within the last century and also only within the context of the Western industrialized countries that women have gained equal rights with men before the law. Throughout history, the norm has been for women's standing in society to be somewhere between that of children, in more progressive times, to being held equal with that of property at certain points in antiquity. Examination of three works from history--"Oedipus the King," a play by Sophocles; "The Yellow Wallpaper," a short story by Charlotte Perkins Gilman; and "My Last Duchess," a poem by Robert Browning-- demonstrates how writers have drawn on the subjugated position of women in society to provide dramatic tension in their work. Bibliography lists 6 sources, but the citation for "Oedipus the King" is incomplete.

This is evidenced by the fact Aristotle praises Sophocles version of the legend of Oedipus (there were several other versions in ancient time) in his text Poetics. Aristotle writes that the "best tragedies are founded on the story of a few houses, on the fortunes of Alcmaeon, Oedipus, Orestes" etc. (Aristotle). During this discussion of the artistic elements of tragedy, Aristotle will often cite "The Oedipus of Sophocles" as an example (Aristotle). Despite the passage of millennia, however, critics continue to argue on the finer points of interpretation. However, the general consensus, down through the ages, is that Sophocles main theme had to do with the sin of hubris and that humanity tries to thwart the will of the gods at its own peril. Nevertheless, different slants to interpretation have been offered, and it is a feminist interpretation that serves to tie "Oedipus" both to Gilmans short story and Brownings poem.
