ruled the city of Thebes before his own tragedy unfolded in the previous play. Polyneices and Eteocles fight over which brother will assume the throne. The initial agreement between the
brothers was that they would share the rule of Thebes, with one brother taking the throne in alternative years. However, after the first year Eteocles refused to surrender rule to
Polyneices. Enraged, at this betrayal, Polyneices joined forces with Adrastus, king of Argos and attacked the city. The brothers met on the battlefield and they killed each other. Creon, their
uncle, was, therefore, able to assume power as ruler and he felt that an example had to be made of Polyneices for taking arms against the state. Creon ruled that
Eteocles would receive a heros funeral, but that the body of Polyneices would be left exposed in the field as carrion. It is at this point that the play begins.
Antigone is determined that she will bury Polyneices despite Creons decree, and she tries to enlist the aid of her sister. Ismene, however, is shocked at the very concept
of going against the will of the ruler. She is very mindful of their position as women, and tells Antigone "...we were born women, as who should not strive with
men...so that we must obey in these things" (Sophocles, 2002). Antigone makes it clear in her reply t hat she is fully aware that her actions will be construed as
treasonous to the state, but she argues that there is a higher authority that must be obeyed. The conflict between Antigone and Creon, the state vs. allegiance to family and
