essential features of the Oedipus myth upon which Freud drew, and then apply these elements to Lawrences narrative, before looking at some of the critical perspectives which have been brought to bear on the text. One of the most important aspects of the Oedipus myth, for instance, is that the incestuous relationship between Oedipus and Jocasta is not only unintentional, it is something which Oedipus himself constantly and diligently strives to avoid throughout the tale. He is determined that the prophecy - that he will kill his father and marry his mother - will not come to fulfillment, and the tragic irony of the story is concerned with the futility of human beings attempting to set themselves against the dictates of the Gods. In effect, the incest itself, albeit shocking, is only a minor element in the narrative: it is Oedipuss efforts to cheat Fate, which are doomed to failure, which are the real focus of the story. Freuds version of the ancient legend, clearly, is rather different. We could perhaps argue that according to Freuds description of the formation of personality, for the individual to try and avoid all the necessary stages in that development would be as futile as Oedipuss attempts to challenge the Fates. Freud was convinced that there were particular stages of development which the individual would go through, and that at some point these would involve changing relationships with the same-gender and opposite-gender parent.
