the brother. The following paper examines how Sonnys drug addiction, and also his love of music, affects the narrator, his brother. Sonnys Blues by James Baldwin
The student asks that the essay of Ann Dillard, Living Like Weasels, be used in an analysis. In this respect Dillards essay notes, "A weasel
is wild.Who knows what he thinks?" Similarly Baldwin notes, as the narrator considers his brother, "Sonny was wild, but he wasnt crazy." In these two excerpts one can see the
similar element of wildness and in truth all living creatures are wild to some extent. While Dillard is clearly speaking of a wild creature, as though it were completely separate
from humanity, Baldwin is offering the reader a sense that Sonny is wild and perhaps trying to use that sense of wildness to understand Sonnys addiction to heroin, something he
"couldnt believe" and something he "had kept...outside" of himself "for a long time" (Baldwin). The reader can see how Sonnys brother is trying to understand his brother, and why he
is addicted, pointing out that it was simply part of his wild nature, thus letting the reader see how the brother is being affected by Sonnys addiction. In essence, the
nature of "wild" simply refers to something more deeply connected to nature, real humanity and also a divergence from normal social behavior associated with humans. In this the weasel and
