Denmark are often discussed in these terms; in fact, there is a sort of symbolism of disease running through the entire play. Hamlet says his wits diseased; he pretends to be mad (or is mad; the text will support either interpretation); he refers to his mother and stepfathers bed as the "nasty sty"; Ophelia loses her mind and tears her hair out, etc. The entire atmosphere of the castle at Elsinore is unhealthy. Discussion There is also the fact that Hamlet believes his mother has tainted the memory of his father by remarrying so quickly, and to his uncle. This "oer hasty marriage" is the thing that sets the whole chain of events in motion, as Hamlet first tries to find a way to fit into a court he no longer knows, and then tries to verify the Ghosts words as to his uncles guilt. The very fact that one brother murdered the other for the crown, and for the hand of the queen, shows how far the kingdom is gone in its slide into putrefaction. People argue that Hamlet delays until circumstances force his hand but thats not true. When Marcellus makes his comment, Hamlet does in fact decide to do something to counter the rottenness that has overtaken the land: he makes up his mind to avenge his fathers murder. In his version of the play, no less a person than Laurence Olivier said that the tragedy was of a young man who could not make up his mind. In an interview, author Gore Vidal said that Oliviers remark was nonsense and he should have known better, because Hamlet does make up his mind, and he makes it up fairly quickly, when he first talks to the Ghost.
