the book Something Wicked This Way Comes, he does not let the reader down. His descriptive prose takes the reader to an unusual time and place. In this fantasy novel,
Bradbury brings the reader back to childhood and the arrival of a carnival. One reviewer describes the story this way: " Appearing in 1962, this is the story of a
diabolical carnival that wreaks havoc on the lives of the people of a small Illinois town, much like the one in which Bradbury grew up" (Rogers 140). While one is
excited from the start at the prospect of the thrills of rides, clowns and freaks, the carnival takes an evil turn. The twists have to do with the mysteries that
are aligned with the traveling show that is more than appears on the surface. With some characters fading into oblivion, and others aging at extraordinary rates, there is mystery in
the air. The book provides much food for thought in respect to physical possibilities. The quality of writing is excellent. The simple word choices are woven into a beautiful dance
of descriptions that present the reader with enough feeling to allow the loss of background thought. A reader can easily get involved with the work very quickly and this is
attributable to the quality of the writing. An example comes from the first paragraph in the first chapter: "The seller of lightening rods arrived just ahead of the storm. He
came along the street of Green Town, Illinois, in the late cloudy October day, sneaking glances over his shoulder. Somewhere not so far back, vast lightenings stomped the earth.
Somewhere, a storm like a great beast with terrible teeth could not be denied" (Bradbury 5). One can almost see a storm approaching in the midst of a quiet town.
