However, the company mistakenly thought the Spanish word "embarazar" meant embarrass. Instead the ads said that "It wont leak in your pocket and make you pregnant" (Gallisteo, 2004). Toomey suggests that cultural differences interfere with communication in at least three ways: 1. Cognitive constraints, which are the frames of reference through which each individual perceives the world (Conflict Research Consortium, 1998). 2. Behavior constraints, which has to do with the types of conduct that are acceptable in each culture. These rules affect and direct both verbal and nonverbal communication. For example, it is not proper in some cultures to have direct eye contact. Appropriate physical proximity distance is different from one culture to another. Some cultures do not talk openly about an issue, they skirt around it feeling (Conflict Research Consortium, 1998). 3. Emotional constraints have to do with whether or not emotions are demonstrated and how strongly emotions are displayed. Some cultures hide their emotions, others yell and scream and otherwise exhibit what they are feeling (Conflict Research Consortium, 1998). More real examples of cultural mishaps: * Denise Taylor receives an URGENT message on March 1st requesting information be sent to the Amsterdam office by 4/3. She faxes it on March 10, pleased to beat the deadline by three weeks, and is met with a hostile response by her Dutch colleague. He demands that Denise be taken off the project. What happened?
