I. Introduction The public school systems are problematic. The schools in fact have become dangerous places to work, and one where job satisfaction is low. In
fact, teacher burnout is rather high and there is dissatisfaction in a variety of areas of school life. One concerns salary. Teachers salaries are notoriously low, particularly when considering the
amount of education they each have. Many have Masters degrees or higher, and then they have to pass the NTE on top of it. Despite all of their education and
effort put into obtaining a teaching certificate, their endeavors are not rewarded monetarily. Rather, teachers are generally stuck with salary levels that are tied to real estate tax dollars, not
performance. And in fact, close to a third of students at colleges today, who might otherwise go into teaching, opt for higher salaries and the prestige of other professions (Lord,
2001). In the meantime, experienced teachers are either retiring or quitting (2001). Another problem is that older, tenured teachers tend to give the profession a bad name. Some teachers
are kept on for quite awhile and their teaching skills have faded. They have not kept pace with educational research and this becomes a problem not just for the children
they teach, but reflects on the school system as a whole. In addition to increasing teacher salaries, a second suggestion is to mandate that teachers who have been teaching a
long time take refresher courses. Parental involvement is another way that schools can flourish. While many parents are involved in the PTA and fundraisers, they often leave schooling up to
