the community will only have to create an initiative to raise money. This is often collected through taxation. However, sometimes community problems require the strong arm of the law. Law enforcement initiatives can go far to correct problems. One problem that seems to affect many communities is drunk driving. Driving while intoxicated or under the influence is a serious concern in society. However, only thirteen states have a high rating for making progress in advancing laws pertinent to motor vehicles, including drunk driving (Dewey-Kollen, 2005). The problem is that automobile accidents can end in injury or deaths, so it is imperative that people be cognizant of what they are doing when they are behind the wheel. Driving after drinking alcohol can create a situation where the driver is not as aware of the road conditions and is more likely to become involve in a motor vehicle accident. It is often up to local police to enforce statutes related to driving while under the influence of alcohol. Again, some states do have harsh laws against driving while intoxicated that results in loss of driving privileges for a period of time as well as steep fines. Yet, there are things that communities can do in addition to simply abiding the law and hoping for the best. Check points do help to resolve the situation. In White Plains, New York, for example, the police would step up sobriety checkpoints around the holidays ("Police To Begin Holiday Checkpoints And Patrols," 2007). This initiative that occurred at the end of 2007 "is part of an ongoing year-round effort that has, according to Tom Meier, director of the Stop-DWI program, fostered cooperation among departments and resulted in safer roads throughout the county" ("Police To Begin Holiday Checkpoints And Patrols," 2007).
