in late 1919 after fighting the Great War (e.g., World War I). The narrative shows Krebs trying to relate to his parents, former friends and the normality of civilian life
and it is clear that he no longer fits in and is unable to emotionally relate to others, as he is detached and withdrawn, emotionally angry as well as damaged
and disoriented. After arriving to his hometown by train, Harold is shown at the train station, smiling at its familiarity, as the narrator informs the audience that he feels
good about good about having done "what a man is suppose to do," i.e., go to war, which left him feeling "clean and pure" An early scene shows Harold sitting
at the dinner table with his mother, father and sister, having just finished a meal. Harold does not initiate conversation, but remains cold and distant. He answers questions, but never
relates on an emotional level with his family, although both his parents and his sister try to be congenial. The viewer does not know if this is simply the family
