World War I brought many challenges not just for US soldiers but for our nation as a whole. With our entry into this
war, after all, the US embarked on a path that was much different than the philosophy of isolationism that had shaped our history. People, actions, and events merged to
result in one of the most traumatic world events of history. The ideological vision of World War I, however, was that it was a war to end all war.
It is no wonder that this war affected our society at every level. It was a first in this regard. It was the first total war that involved
all aspects of modern society. Not surprisingly, World War I demanded much from citizens and soldiers alike. It also presented many
hardships that had to be overcome. Men had to leave their families and, indeed, their nation to fight oversees in lands most of them had never dreamed they would
see. Women were left back home to hold together the pieces of the lives they once had. The men gave their very lives to fight for principle.
