a commercial solution, it is clear that there is an overwhelming amount of information and a need for those who can specialise and aid with the selection and solution process.
As such it is only natural that the software consultancy industry has been increasing in size and selection. By looking at aspects of the industry and then two companies within
that industry a better picture of structure and future may be gained. In the United States the software industry in one that has faced many challenges. Today the competitors
are those who have survived the challenges of the past and new start ups (Rubin and Iventosch, 2002). In 1998 the industry
is growing quickly, the turnover in 1998 was US$140.9 billion at the time this was predicted at increasing by 17.8% each year until 2001 when it would reach $228
billion. However, when we consider that in 2002 the pre-packaged software was a market of $221.9 billion, this indicates not only
that it is the fastest growing sector of software sales, but also that the sales are head of predictions (Rubin and Iventosch, 2002). In total the pre-packaged software alone makes
up 2% of the national GDP (Rubin and Iventosch, 2002). However., looking at the market itself it is easy to see how the provision of software is dominated by only
a few companies. The largest is that of Microsoft, which is often accused of having an almost monopolistic position and lost the anti-trust case regarding abuse of this position.
