are likely to be any more requirements. If we consider the case of a small business that is thinking of purchasing new
accounting software the process of selection can be considered. The current system is computerized with the accounts set up manually in a spreadsheet program and the invoices are printed out
manually on templates. The business owner requires a system where there is increased integration and automation where invoices will automatically move over to the accounting package.
There are many methods of choosing software, however, whatever method is chosen the first step has to be that of defining the functionality that is
required of the software by looking at the tasks it needs to perform and the environment in which it needs to operate and the level of those who will be
using it and compatibility with other software programs already in use. Other aspects such as budget, time scale and the level of after sales support that will be needed.
Two of the methods that are often used to select software are those of elimination and scoring. These may be used independently or in
conjunction with each other. The needs of users and tasks of the software need to be very clearly defined as the baseline from which the selection methodology is measured will
