Essay / Research Paper Abstract
An 8 page overview of the challenges faced by software engineers in the last five years. Identifies the most predominant of these as revolving around the Internet and issues such as networking and operating system compatibility. One of the primary problems which is central to each of these arenas is that of data sharing. Software engineers not only have to address compatibility across operating systems but between networked computers and over the Internet. Bibliography lists 15 sources.

in the last five years. As is the case with all arenas of engineering, the prime focus in software engineering has been the avoidance of failure (Petroski, 2001).
This focus has received considerable challenges in the arenas of the Internet and issues such as networking and operating system compatibility. One of the primary problems which is central
to each of these arenas is that of data sharing. Software engineers not only have to address compatibility across operating systems but between networked computers and over the Internet
(Vaughan-Nichols, 1997). Another key issue in the transmission of data over computer systems is that of privacy. While some information is intended to be shared between a variety
of users, other information is extremely private in nature. Software engineers have consequently had to simultaneously address compatibility and privacy issues in a variety of different formats.
One of the first issues which must be addressed in software development is operating system compatibility. Software engineers are constantly confronted with different conditions
which necessitate new operating systems Goulde (1995) provides a brief review of some of the systems which were at the top of the heap only five years ago. Today,
that list has evolved considerably. Companies like Microsoft, Adobe, and other leaders in the field are constantly changing the formats and approaches to the issue of compatibility (Mackenzie, 1998;
Microsoft Corporation, 2001; Worldwide Videotex Update, 2001). Operating systems can be complex both in their diversity and their compatibility. The complexity isnt helped much with the number of
different systems currently out there or with the greater and greater tendencies toward high concentration on online activities and toward networking. When one thinks of computer networking a line
