The question over whether to build or buy software will depend on the needs of the company in term of the migration project definition,
what can be re-used, and selection of the right method of creating portability with existing in-house programs. This memorandum will provide some background toward this end, as well as offer
a comparison of three options: in-house customized application development, off-the-shelf product, and customizable software application. Background
Sheesley (2008) states the obvious, that off-the-shelf software is less expensive than custom software, but he makes a good point, off-the-shelf is more rigid and the result could
be that important features go unsupported, in this case, an unsupportable solution to the Companys needs. Loza (2002) makes a good point
when he says there might be a good reason to build in-house. This wouldnt be true if the solution was only an order entry system, but it might be even
worst trying to integrate an existing application off-the shelf into internal systems already functioning and integrated with internal financial systems. Therefore, a balance must be made between price and value.
One of the most promising options is the purchase of a portability option offering customizable pre-written software. It is more expensive, but the
right package can be altered to meet the Companys needs. The following is a comparison of the options:
