Essay / Research Paper Abstract
A 3 page comparison of these two works and men. The author of this paper contends that there are many similarities between Ovid’s “Metamorphoses” and Socrates’ “Apology”, not the least of which is the fact that Ovid could be said to be a recreation of Socrates, a manifestation of that “gadfly” Socrates warns of in the “Apology” which acts to stir the great steed of the Athenian state into action. While Socrates in this analogy feeds upon the blood of Athens, Ovid feeds upon the blood of Rome. No additional sources are listed.

On first consideration Socrates and Ovid would have few commonalties. Socrates, after all lived between 469-399 B.C. and was
Athenian. While Socrates was Greek, Ovid was Latin. There was also a considerable separation in time between the lives of these two men. Ovid would be born
until over three centuries after Socrates death. His life would span between 43 B.C. and A.D. 18 and his birthplace would be in Sulmo in the Apenninines but his
heart would be in Rome. Both Socrates and Ovid, however, were concerned with such philosophical premises as those contained in the law. While Socrates devoted the majority of
his life to such philosophical issues, however, Ovid devoted his life to poetry. Ovid was particularly noted for the verse "Metamorphoses". "Metamorphoses" is a collection of some
250 myths, all tied together through intricate prose relating a connected chronology, a common psychology and emotion. Quiet extensive in length, this poem actually is composed of fifteen "books",
the total of which equal the size of our modern-day novel. With more introspect we can perceive many similarities between Ovids "Metamorphoses" and Socrates "Apology".
While "Apology" is Platos account of Socrates trial and ultimate death it is also an account of the changes which Socrates has seen throughout his
life. In many ways these changes are reminiscent of the changes Ovid describes in "Metamorphoses". Socrates has been accused, however, of corrupting the youth and of placing
disbelief in the Greeces gods. Perhaps the most insidious aspect of the trial related in the "Apology", however, was the apparent association between Alcibiades and Socrates.
