The reason why it is ironic that Socrates had been accrued of corruption is that while he did promote the arts, he wanted it censored to a point in order to protect the children. Just as today, films are restricted so that youth are not corrupted, Socrates saw a problem with certain forms of art. Platos Republic tells a great deal about the philosopher and his attempts at these restrictions. The Republic is actually a true apology or defense of Socrates, and ultimately of philosophy, but it is much more than that. The Republic focuses on morality and a host of other things, and while that is true, one has to understand the controversial nature of Socrates at the time. Today, he is a respected philosopher, but when he lived, Socrates was a controversial character and thought to be a bad influence on the youth of Athens. His role in society is thought to be rather significant in politics and culture and his ideas permeate modern life. One can take things a step further and suggest that Socrates has influenced the discipline of philosophy so much that it has immeasurably been altered. Who was Socrates and why was he so influential? Socrates was a Greek philosopher who was born in Athens ("Socrates," 2004). His influence on the planet is well known. He is infamous. Plato claims that Socrates had devoted his last thirty years to changing the ideas of the Athenians in respect to moral matters (2004).
