For example, a simple discussion of justice and the good and evil nature of mankind will become more complex and take on different avenues of pursuit when the element of God or art is introduced. This clearly seems to be the case, in at least one respect, when we examine Socrates examination of justice in Book I-III of Platos Republic. In Book I Socrates argues against one mans definition of justice and then, in Books II and III, seems to reinstate the argument, validating it in some ways. The following paper examines these two portions of Socrates arguments and illustrates how part of his reasoning behind altering his argument involves the elements of God and art, or literature. Book I In the first book of the Republic, Socrates formulates Polemarchus attempt to rescue his fathers definition of justice as "the art which gives good to friends and evil to enemies" (Plato Book I). As is normally the case, with any discussion or controversy that comes Socrates way, he argues it to a point where it appears to be completely invalid. He then compares the doing good as it relates to the physician, who gives help to friends with sickness, or the pilot who helps friends against "the perils of the sea" (Plato Book I). He then inquires into "what sort of actions or with a view to what result is the just man most able to do harm to his enemy and good to his friends?," to which the reply is, "In going to war against the one and in making alliances with the other" (Plato Book I).
