A student asks: "What is this service and how is Socrates claim here consistent with his rejection of, or at least difficulty with, this definition as formulated in Euthyphro?" First,
it should be noted that Socrates and Euthyphro are at odds as each accuses the other of circular reasoning. At the same time, to an extent, they say some of
the same things. For Socrates, service to the gods, or service in a very general sense, is something that is goal orientated. People serve and then there is an end
result. They may volunteer on an ambulance squad and in that service help other people to live. They might even save lives. Service that is equated with industry may be
in the form of the creation of an item that would otherwise not be created if it were not for the person serving. Yet, when it comes to serving the
gods, Socrates believed that the people were helping the Gods in this way. It is an idea that makes sense. However, when one is talking about supreme beings, or a
supreme being, one has to wonder how people can help to that end. After all, the gods are naturally more powerful than human beings. Euthyphro would of course agree with
that sentiment and oppose Socrates on this matter. The gods of course are powerful. What do they need with people? Helping gods to some extent is a way of showing
reverence. More specifically, in the argument between Socrates and Euthyphro, Socrates distinguishes service in terms of skillful service and piety (McPherran, 2000). The author explains in more detail: " Obviously,
then, since mere mortals cannot benefit gods in these ways, the virtue of piety cannot be a therapy of the gods. By contrast, "skillful service" (... /huperetike) along the lines
