know about Socrates is second-hand (Kemerling, 2001; Nails, 2005). Most of what we know about Socrates comes from two of his students, Xenophon and Plato with Platos works being the
most popular (Kemerling, 2001). Others who cite Socrates include Aristotle and Aristophanes (Crystal, 2005). Nails (2005) says that Socrates was an enigma during this lifetime and he remains so today.
He changed philosophy and how it was conceived forever and admiration for him and emulation of him is at a height and degree that is more often reserved for founders
of great religions (Nails, 2005). However, exactly who Socrates was and exactly what his own thoughts were has become a problem in itself - the Socratic problem (Nails, 2005).
Nails (2005) reports: "One thing is certain about the historical Socrates: even among those who knew him in life, there was profound disagreement about what his actual views and methods
were." Since Plato was a philosopher himself, it is nearly impossible to determine what words Plato attributed to Socrates were in fact, his own thoughts and Aristophanes was known as
a satirist so his accounts may also be skewed (Crystal, 2005; Kemerling, 2001). Furthermore, both Plato and Xenophon were at least 45 years younger than Socrates, which means they
could only have known him in his last years (Nails, 2005). One finds in any of theses authors reports inconsistencies and contradictions in terms of what Socrates allegedly said (Nails,
2005). Socrates was always in search of truth and it is his method that may be "the most important contribution to Western thought" (Crystal, 2005). It is the dialogical method
