a non-linguistic culture or someone suffering from various neuro-linguistic deficiencies attempting to adapt to a highly socialized language-driven culture. Michael Apteds film, "Nell", dramatizes the traumatic nature of such an
acculturative experience. This paragraph helps the student give a brief overview of "Nell" and how it relates to sociological topics. The film opens with the discovery of a dead woman
in a cabin in the woods, and her surviving daughter Nell; because the daughter has been kept in the woods by the mother all her life, she reacts to the
introduction of "regular" human society in a savage way, withdrawing from human contact and engaging in a strange language known only to herself. Nells gradual acculturation, as tended to by
two psychiatric professionals, forms the bulk of the narrative, and provides insight into a number of sociological concepts related to culture and the acculturation process. First and foremost, the
concept of culture is introduced at the very beginning of the film, when the culture experienced by Nell in her isolation in the woods comes into contact with the more
traditional culture of the people from the nearby town where she is taken after her discovery. Culture shock is evident from both sides, as Nell struggles to adapt to strange
customs, and the doctors struggle to engage Nell on their own linguistic terms. Efforts to engage Nell linguistically through the use of humor are ineffective, and consequently, ethnocentric biases threaten
to undo the acculturation process before it even begins, as Nell is threatened with the possibility of being institutionalized by a doctor who is unwilling to interpret her culture outside
