intriguing subject for many a scholar and professional. Each society, or culture, seems to have its own rituals, many of them never even consciously noticed by the individual. And, as
David A. Karp and William C. Yoels, the authors of "Sociology in Everyday Life," note, many such rituals or social behaviors would be seen as a sign of insanity in
another culture. In the following paper we examine this particular book, providing a synopsis of the first three chapters. The paper summarizes with a brief discussion of the theme and
purpose and of this book. Development of the Perspective The student should note that this particular chapter begins with a very clear definition of what will be covered in
this particular chapter and this particular section. The authors illustrate that "The first part of this book, consisting of three chapters, is designed to accomplish three broad goals: (1) to
introduce the study of everyday life as a legitimate concern in the study of sociology; (2) to provide you with knowledge of some of sociologys key concepts; and (3) to
lay out the theoretical perspective that is most helpful in analyzing everyday events" (Karp; Yoels 3). In specific regards to chapter 1 we note that the authors state "Chapter 1
presents a rationale for the study of everyday behavior. The notion that clear cultural expectations underlie daily activity is illustrates with examples of regularities in the use of time, space,
and gesture" (Karp; Yoels 3). We also note that the purpose of the chapter is to also demonstrate "the significance or everyday behavior in studying how society itself is ordererd"
(Karp; Yoels 3). What we are seeing is that Karp and Yoels wish to set up the foundations of understanding the importance of behavior in everyday life. There are
