Sapir/Whorf hypothesis This is a mould theory of language which states that the way in which words are used is not objective, and that there is a relationship between the way a person speaks and understand language and the way that person seen the world (Chandler, 1994). The argument is that language is influenced by the thoughts of those who speak that language, meaning that language is not able to represent the world accurately. This is important in terms of studying humanity as language may be seen as influenced and reflective of the though processes and characteristics of the society that is being studied (Chandler, 1994). Bureaucracy Bureaucracy is a model that illustrates a pattern of control and administration. This is a structure where there is an organisational hierarchy, where the operations are controlled by rules and procedures, with formal separation duties and positions and division of responsibility (Weber). There are bureaucracies seen in the way societies are organised from aspects such as government structures to the way companies are organised. Understanding these are important to understanding the study of humanity as they give one model of the way rules governing society and its components may operate and how power is distributed and delegated where this system is in place.
