of interpretation; however, this does not make it any less important a discipline. Discussion When it comes to classifying sociology, its easy to see where the confusion might lie, since
it deals with matters that are imprecise. One definition tells us: "Sociology is the study of society and human social action. It generally concerns itself with the social rules and
processes that bind and separate people not only as individuals, but as members of associations, groups, and institutions, and includes the examination of the organization and development of human social
life" (Sociology, 2006). Since terms such as "society," "human social action," and "social rules and processes" are inexact, its usually assumed that any study of them will be inexact as
well. But the American Sociological Association, which was founded in 1905, disagrees. The ASA has "nearly 14,000 members" and is "dedicated to advancing sociology as a scientific discipline and
profession serving the public good" (Mission, 2005). The ASA counts among its members sociologists "who are faculty members at colleges and universities, researchers, practitioners, and students" with 20% of the
organizations members working in "government, business, or non-profit organizations" (Mission, 2005). The ASA exists to "provide a unique set of services to its members and to promote the vitality, visibility
and diversity of the discipline" (Mission, 2005). The ASA has fought for a considerable length of time against the reputation sociology has a field based largely on "hunches" and
