Some still see sociology as a discipline trying to “find itself,” but that view is most common among those who fail to understand the wide variety of sociological perspectives and their applicability today’s changing environment. The purpose here is to discuss the concepts and some of the theorists of Neo-functionalism, Structuralism and Symbolic Interactionism. The theorists discussed are Talcott Parsons, Robert K. Merton, Claude Lévi-Strauss, Louis Althusser, Pierre Bourdieu, Charles Horton Cooley, George Herbert Mead and Erving Goffman. Bibliography lists 11 sources.

Functionalism is sociologys oldest theoretical perspective central to the function of other social sciences as well. It is based on "application of the scientific method to the objective social
world and use of an analogy between the individual organism and society" (Functionalism, 2000). Its emphasis on the scientific method seeks to bring "legitimacy" to sociology among those who
feel the discipline lacks that particular quality. Much of the philosophy of functionalism can be attributed to Durkheim, one of the first to use the scientific method and statistical
techniques in social research (Functionalism, 2000). Thus it is functionalism to which we can attribute the origin and rise of the qualitative method of inquiry that has come to
be so important today in many disciplines, some of which have been viewed quantitatively literally for decades. An example is nursing, where reliable and valid qualitative research rests on
the foundations laid by Durkheim. Aside from scientific investigation, functionalism also holds to the concept of "the organic unity of society" (Functionalism, 2000)
and the concept of social systems. Within the network of social systems that is the society, the individuals responsibility is to behave within the values and norms that the
