In this assignment, it would be useful for the student to look at some of the strengths and weaknesses in the questionnaire in Appendix E. The first element which is
obvious about it is its length and the scope of the questions: it is something which would be daunting to complete in its entirety and this in itself may lessen
its efficiency as a research tool, since subjects may be tempted to skip questions or not consider them in sufficient depth before answering. On the other hand, if completed correctly,
it is true that it would provide an extremely comprehensive and detailed profile of the subject, which therefore has the potential to provide material for further research in a number
of different areas. In terms of
its format, the questionnaire offers several different methods of responding to questions. For example, section 81 offers a series of either-or alternatives which are designed to assess the relative importance
to the subject of five different activities - church, school, family, political and community - in relation to one another. Section 82, on the other hand, looks at one of
those aspects (religion) and rather than offering alternatives, asks the subject to place religion on a sliding scale of importance within other activities, such as family life and work. Section
84 requires the subject not to estimate subjectively the importance of particular activities, but to assess objectively how much time is spent on each, in terms of hours per week.
