the work of these theorists, regardless of their particular scientific interests and method. In looking at religion specifically, how did Marx, Durkheim, and Weber study the social phenomenon
and what were their conclusions? First, it should be noted that Marx is known to have described religion as being the opiate of the people. More precisely, he has actually
stated: "But the attitude of the state, especially the free state, to religion is merely the attitude of men who make up the state to religion....Religion is precisely the recognition
of man by detour through an intermediary" (Marx, p.52). Suffice it to say, Marx did not believe in religion and had in fact rejected it for himself. Although one would
like to say that Marx systematically investigated religion, his interests were largely unscientific. He explored religion early in life and rejected it; there has been some speculation that this was
due to his fathers rejection of his own heritage. In any event, Marx was a Hegelian and immersed himself in that philosophy for a time. It appears that Marxs ideas
come from life experience and his own prejudices as well as sociological observations in terms of behavior of people. Yet, his methods are not improper. Even today, people may observe
the religious who will do most anything their Pastor or Priest asks them to. They simply trust the religious leader and the Bible and their beliefs with little question. This
